It was great to see all of our students return this morning after a great Spring Break.
AS we return, focus will be turned to our EOY Assessments. As I said in our Weekly Reminders, MClass Assessments begin at the end of this week. All instruction will be to help students prepare and be successful on all EOY and EOG assessments.
Today, each grade level had an assembly regarding student behaviors and expectations for the remainder of the school year. I wanted to share these expectations with parents as well. The expectations that were discussed today were general behaviors and consequences for those behaviors.
Beginning today, students who misbehave during class time will be removed from the class environment for a period of time in order for that child to have the opportunity to “reset” or self-regulate. It is not acceptable to expect the teacher to have to assist in resetting behaviors while trying to teach crucial material to the other students. Therefore, the disruptive student will be removed from the class for 1 hour to have time for all to “reset” so the students can rejoin the learning process. This reset will not be a referral, but simply documented as a reset for the child. Teachers will not call the parent regarding the reset as we want to teach the child to self-regulate and get back to a normal day.
If the child returns to class and persists with disruptive behavior, the child will be removed from the class and sent to ISS for the remainder of the day. This will result in a referral by the teacher and the parent will be notified by the teacher of the referral by 5:00 pm that same day. We want the parent to be aware that a referral was made for ISS so the parent can follow up with the child about making better choices at school.
Once the day has ended, the process starts over each day with 1 reset, then, if necessary, ISS. This procedure is for core classes. Specials will remove a student from the class period only (ex. The art teacher sends a student for reset for the reminder of the art class.)
If the resetting and ISS become a trend each day and week, Out of School Suspension may be required to help the student and class continue with a better learning environment. These cases will be reviewed on an individual basis by the Principal and Assistant Principal.
Please know that we are making every effort to make safety and instruction our number 1 priority. We are striving for success this year.
Thanks for your attention and it is a pleasure to serve as your Principal
